EDM 119 - Rocks

Rocks are quite difficult to paint. I'm not sure why. Perhaps its because of the texture or maybe its difficult to capture their shapes accurately, or maybe because I find the colors a bit boring. I don't know what my real problem was/is. I'm not happy with these, there's nothing wrong, but it just seemed difficult and I don't know how to fix it. I like the compostition though, the rocks fit well together and that part was fun. These are some of the rocks that we've gathered in our travels because they were odd and different. It's not often that you find a rock that is almost perfectly round, or one that looks like a pertrified dinosaur vertebrae.

You'll probably hate me for this, but I think the composition is part of the problem. I think it likely makes a great 3d comp, but doesn't work for an image comp - if that makes sense at all? Because without reading your post I could not see these as stones, I saw an abstract object. Of course it all depends on the effect you want...

Sarah, you're exactly right! The composition just didn't translate well into a 2D drawing. Thank you! And no I would never hate you for offering advice that I asked for. I appreciate you replying.

YOu know it MIGHT be a vertebrae...we have tons of sharks teeth and other "litter" from the sea like mouth plates, bones that we pick up on the beach at Edisto...all fossilized...and some of them are that brown you painted...most are black BUT a few are BROWN

I think these are some mighty fine rocks. And you're right, rocks ARE hard to draw - something about the texture or colors or something. These are all interesting shapes - the round one is cute.

Very cool! I still have to do my "rocks" challenge. :)

Rocks are hard and I think part of the problem is the texture. All the nooks and crannies, shadows and lights. I have to say I agree with Sarah, that the composition here is the issue. Your technique is not the problem.
