Monthly Sketch Project May

Flowers are one of my favorite inspirations for drawing and painting. This is the photo for the Monthly Sketch Project. I loved the ranges of pinks, but mostly the dark background grabbed my attention. It's very difficult to do dark in watercolor, but I think it's important to learn how. It's the dark that often makes the light work.

Sadly, once again I missed the deadline to post this on the Sketch Project site. But do click the link and look at how some others drew the project.

Another beautiful looking one! =) I am sure my wife would love the pink of this one, I am just admiring the tones all over ^^

This is very pretty, you did very well on both the flowers and the background! What media did you use to do the background? It doesn't look like just watercolor.

Johanna, the background was done using watercolor pencils. I did indigo first, then layered bottle green on top. Then I smoothed it all out with water.

I was thinking the same thing as Johanna about the background. You've created some wonderful texture back there! It's a wonderful piece!

They're lovely and I agree about the darks. I've often wondered if you need to "mask" the flowers and then do a even wash over the background. Haven't done it, just wondered.

I really like how the background color draws out the colors of the flowers. Such talent :>)
