Onions

The beautiful onions were part of good haul bought last year at the Farmers Market.  They were coloured with the new Faber Castelle Aquarelle water-colour pencils that I bought.  These pencils are quite hard and create a very sharp line.  They don't blend instantly with water and so even if you add water, you retain the edge of the lines.  I'm not sure that I like that although for this drawing it worked well.  In the actual onions you do see distinct lines of colour, but it makes
the shadows not so believable.
And in the continuing adventure of learning the Mac Book and flying without a printer/scanner, I uploaded this as a photo taken with the iPhone in natural daylight.  This little sketchbook is nearly filled and over time the pages have curved quite a bit and it is hard to take a good photo.  I think I'll switch to a different kind that stays flat.  I do think that the photo colour is very true to the sketch colours.  I think I can make this work!

First of all, let me say how sorry I am about the loss of your mother. I hope you're doing OK during this sad time. Your sketch of the onions turned out really well, in spite of the curved paper! nancy

Lovely drawing, especially the colour and thanks for the opinion on the pencils. I have not used them before, but sometimes I would like a like a hard line, so I may buy a few.

really nice drawing. i think the lines work well in this drawing since onions have such distinct banding. The iphone picture turned out well too! I'm visiting from CED.

That is good to know about the pencils, which I would certainly keep because they do have their uses...like here. This is beautiful. I know Cathy Johnson has some information on her site somewhere talking about which ones work well.

Lynn, your onions are fabulous! i love the different shades of purple. I think it's important to experiment with different medium (pencils, paints, etc.) You'll know what works for you. There's still SO much out there I haven't tried. Thanks for sharing! xoxo

Love the colors and details =)
Sorry to hear about your loss.
It's hard, I don't know but I could tell from my wife's experience.

Lynn, first of all, please accept my condolences on the loss of your mother. It changes so much. Your nice remark about Handsome Partner on my blog was very poignant, since he died last August, after years of total dependence on me, complete paralysis, and I'm just now starting to remember the funny stuff we shared, and to get back into artforms that I was knocked out of for a while. So I share that with you.

Your blog is lovely, and I really appreciate your analyzing what you're doing, and how, and whether it meets with your own approval! that and I like very much drawings of simple natural objects, well not so simple, really, such as onions!

I plan to follow and enjoy your blog from now on. So good to meet you.
