EDM 111 - Bowl

Yes, the shading on the apple really is that bad on the real bowl. When I was growing up, my family had an old cabin that they had purchased furnished in 1940/50 cabin kitsch style. It included this enormous bowl covered with partially-identifiable ceramic fruit painted all sorts of improbable colors. Many years later, when my parents sold that cabin, my mom asked me if I wanted that bowl. I said yes as that bowl had lots of memories attached. My mom is a warm and generous person, but not very sentimental about "things". When she left the cabin for the last time, she did so without the bowl. She was devastated once she realized what she had done, and spent the next couple of years searching for the perfect replacement bowl. This was the closest she could come to. It's not the same, but still I'm left wondering just what is that red blob on the right hand side. And that green one is probably an unripe cantalope, but I can't be sure. But it does have that kitschy, quirkiness about it that is fun.

It looks like a wonderful bowl and the story to go with it is great! I also know how difficult these elllipses are as I tried a bowl and will have to redo it a few times:)

Hahah this is great! I love the story behind the bowl, and you gotta love kitch! Maybe that last one is a Plum? Just a guess.

Nice job with the fruit and highlights! It really looks "ceramic", if you know what I mean. And I am in FULL agreement about how hard a "simple" bowl can be! Keep up the great work! Cheers! Mary Ellen

Thanks for inspiring me to look through my mother's bowls for a bowl to draw. i don't have any that are interesting. My mum has one's that also bring back memories for me

This is a great bowl! The fruit turned out very nice. Like you, I enjoy things (especially old things) and remember a glass vase my grandmother used to keep on her dining room table. I want one like it, but have never been able to find something even close. But I have fond memories of it.

With objects involving ellipses, I find it easier to draw a box and then draw the bowl in the box and then disappear the box. I really like your bowl though, it's lovely and loose and authentic.

What a fun subject. Something that will keep you wondering. This a great sketch of it.

Very cheery bowl and it's great to have the story too.
